Guns manufactured 1945-1950 will (usually) have a 'S' preceding the serial number.

When the grade designations and engraving patterns were changed in 1913, "Field" or a capital letter (I=Ideal, T=Trap, S=Specialty, etc.) were stamped on the action flats and barrel flats underneath the serial number the grade was also marked on the top of the right barrel. The serial number alone is not adequate to identify or date your Smith gun.Ī numeric grade stamp began to appear underneath the serial number with the introduction of the No. Please review the General Information FAQ "Is my shotgun safe to shoot?" before using your L.C.
